How to Make a Good First Impression: 7 Habits of People Who Do It Well

How to make a good first impression: helpful tips on confidence, eye contact, listening, & authentic ways to start making genuine connections.

People who made a good first impression and now they're friends.

It takes just a moment for someone to believe certain things about you, and perceptions can linger.

The way you act, talk, and even dress can send certain messages to the people you interact with.

And sometimes they can even lead to misunderstandings. But thankfully, you are in control of what other people think of you when you make a first impression. When you’re meeting someone for the first time, you are in control of how genuinely interested you are in them and so many other important factors.

Also, first impressions can have a lot of benefits if you do them just right (think first date or an important job interview). So, if you really wanna know how to make a good first impression, then here are seven habits of people who do it well.

Making a good first impression comes easy to them, and it can for you too!

1. They Dress Well

Physical appearance is important, and especially for first impressions.

Why? Because the people you meet won’t know anything about you, so your appearance will be the first thing that sends them signals about what kind of person you are.

Just keeping a polished, well put together look can do some much when you talk to someone for the first time. So if you don’t want to give the wrong first impression with another person, then make sure to get clothing that fits you well, and regularly practice self-maintenance.

2. They Listen and Ask Questions

When it comes to creating great first impressions, this one is ridiculously important.

If you want to make sure that first impression is a good one, then show that you’re listening and interested. Whatever they’re talking about, ask them questions and follow-ups.

Also, think about how you would want someone else to act and make you feel if you were talking about something that was important to you. Then make sure not to put the spotlight on yourself, and just focus on showing how interested you are in them and what they have to say.

It’s such a great way to make a good first impression, and even make friends.

3. They Give Firm Hand Shake

A good intentional handshake is also very important. It gives people a sense of connection and warmth when you give a solid handshake; like you’re happy to meet them.

So don’t hesitate to extend your hand for a firm handshake because it’s a great start to a conversation. Also, it’s such a simple thing you can do for your first impression.

4. They Practice Good Manners

Good manners are always appreciated, whether it’s with someone you know or a first meeting. And some of the best things you can do are to pay attention while listening, don’t be waiting for them to stop talking so that you can talk, make sure to not get distracted with your phone, and don’t talk over them.

5. Arriving on Time

Nobody likes to be kept waiting, and especially if they’re waiting for someone they don’t even know. And while it might be easy to think that being late isn’t that big of a deal, you’re sending a very clear message to them. You’re letting them know that your time is more important than their time.

So if you really want to learn how to make a good impression, then this is one habit you can’t skip. Just arrive a few minutes early and wait for them if they’re not already there. It shows that you’re punctual and care about their time.

6. They Have a Positive Attitude

Your attitude says a lot about you in a first impression, and complaining definitely says a ton.

I mean think of the people you’ve met who were positive and up beat; didn’t you want to keep hanging out with them? So try to make sure to keep the conversation steered in a more positive direction.

Also, protect your attitude even if you face criticism or a stressful situation; it shows others what kind of person you are under pressure.

7. They’re Genuine

If you try to look cool then you might just end up looking fake. And if you want to have a more memorable conversation and to feel more connected in your first meetings, then just be relaxed and be you.

Present yourself as who you actually are while also practicing good manners, keeping eye contact, and having positive body language. These are all helpful for making a good first impression.
