8 Graphs That Will Turn You Into an Interior Decorating Genius

Infographics that'll help you hang art, set the mood, and have a beautiful space.

Home decor.

You might have just moved into your new house or apartment, or maybe youโ€™ve lived in it for awhile. But one thingโ€™s for sure (at least Iโ€™m assuming since youโ€™re reading this), you wanna find a new way to make your home look great. And thatโ€™s why I decided to create a list of helpful infographics that’ll get you well on your way to making your space look amazing.

And while you’re probably not an interior decorating graduate, with a few simple steps and tips, you can become an interior decorating genius. So check out the graphs below and see what will really elevate your home.

Also in this article, Iโ€™ll point out what tip I think is the best from the graph or know to be true for myself. And sometimes Iโ€™ll even include a tip of my own, so read on and let me know what you think!

How to Display Art in Your Home

PHOTO: MADE.COM

Eye Level and Lining Up With the Middle: I really like this tip on how to hang pictures. You really want to make sure that itโ€™s at eye level and each picture (no matter how tall or short) is lining up with their middle. You donโ€™t want to hang a short photo (or piece of art) and line it up with the top or bottom of the long piece.

Update: Made.com no longer exists.

How to Hang Art Above the Sofa

Now this one may not have any specific tips on why you should hang your pictures in a certain order, but it certainly gives some great ideas on different hanging orders to make your room look great.

Lighting Size and Placement Guide

PHOTO: FURNISHEDUP

Hang your light(s) 7 feet above the bedroom floor: But make sure itโ€™s at least 6 inches above your head when kneeling on your bed (that is if itโ€™s above your bed).

Update: Site no longer exists.

How to Choose the Right Paint Finish

PHOTO: PULTE

Paint your ceilings flat: Your walls are one of the main focal points in a room, not the ceiling. So a flat finish to the top of your room looks best.

Update: Original page on Pulte no longer exists.

How to Choose a Color Scheme

Now if youโ€™re painting your room(s) for the first time (or perhaps itโ€™s not your first time), then this is a great guide to lead you through picking the best colors to make your home look its best.

Choosing the Right Rug

If youโ€™re into rugs, then Discover (a blog by World Market) has a great graph to show you how you can decorate your room with one and how to place it. Itโ€™s a great way to add some color to your woodย or even carpeted floors.

The Beginnerโ€™s Guide to Interior Design and Decorating

Alternating lights fixtures: Now Iโ€™ve seen this one many times on Pinterest, but alternating heights for hanging lights is a great way to add some fun to your room and make it look chic.

Update: Page on Cottage & Bungalow is no longer there.

What You Need to Know About Interior Design

PHOTO: BECKENSTEIN FABRICS

Wall Art That Corresponds With Upholstery: A great way to give your room some good color and unity is to have the colors in a painting (or even a photo) match the colors of your furniture (even if itโ€™s just a nicely upholstered chair).

Update: Original site no longer exists.

Bonus: How Long Do Your Systems and Appliances Last

Now this may not be interior decoration, but if youโ€™re looking into taking care of your home and perhaps replacing old appliances (such as ovens or refrigerators) for more visually appealing ones, then hereโ€™s when you should replace them all.

Update: Please check to make sure the information above is up to date; this article is a few years old.
